what's in your syllabus?

On my blog, bleckblog, I posted some comments on what I'm doing in first year composition. Along with having students analyze political videos, political websites, and maybe a newsgroup, along with writing an argument, they are also going to have to use John Locke's second Treatise on Government as a springboard for each essay, drawing ideas from the readings and finding videos, websites, etc. that can be discussed within the context of Locke's ideas. What are others doing?

Fall Term

I've had a theory for awhile that the texts don't really matter. Well, I've taken a fairly radical step this term and have decided to let the students come up with the readings that we are going to be doing. It always seems that my students take the class where they want to go anyway, so it will part of the course requirements for them to develop a set of readings for different days in the course. Of course, there will be some parameters, and I will have to spend time approving each different set of readings. My hope is that students will be more engaged with material that they have decided to study. I'm kind of concerned about how it will work; I'll let you know how it plays out.
